Teen dreams of Sarajevo

SOUTH CLE ELUM — A 17-year-old Upper County student with dreams of a career in filmmaking hopes to head to Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina at the end of this month to spend four to five months working as an intern on a movie.
Sakiya Carlucci of South Cle Elum said she was 12 when she started dreaming of a career in acting. That dream’s evolved into working as a director as well.
The teen comes by her inspiration naturally.
She’s the granddaughter of the late Madeline Johnson-Bratt, a longtime Ellensburg area resident who was involved in the Ellensburg Children’s Theater for nearly 30 years. Her mother, Yvette Knight of South Cle Elum, was also involved in theater.
This past summer, Sakiya and her father, Mike Carlucci, took a trip to California. It included a stop in Venice Beach where they connected with Elliott Lewitt, an independent film maker.
“When I was born our families were neighbors and shared the same backyard,” Sakiya says. “I guess his daughter just adored me.”
Lewitt, whose credits include producing “Around the Bend,” a film that won two major awards at the 2004 Montreal Film Festival, said he was in the process of putting together a cast and crew to produce a film in Sarajevo.
“I was like, ‘Well, if you ever need any help call me,’” Sakiya says with a laugh. “I’m thinking, ‘Pick me! Pick me!’”
She and Lewitt stayed in touch through e-mail. When she got back to Washington, he told her he’d welcome her as an intern on the film but that she would have to pay her own travel and living expenses.
That figure comes to about $7,000, Sakiya says.
“An intern is pretty much a gofer,” she says. “He’s going to take some time to show me how you go about making a film.”
Sakiya said the film will be directed by Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington of “The House of Sand.” It will star Orlando Bloom (“Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Lord of the Rings”) Liam Neeson and Bono, among others.
The movie is based on a book by American Bill Carter who was wandering the world in 1991 trying to deal with emotional pain after the death of his girlfriend in a car accident.
The war in Bosnia had just broken out.
Sarajevo was a city under siege. People were starving.
Through a friend, Carter became involved with a maverick humanitarian relief organization, The Serious Road Trip, that was running trucks loaded with food into Sarajevo.
Carter, a man whose grief left him feeling he had little to lose, signed on to be a driver.
Carter decided to stay in Sarajevo, drawn by the way the residents of that city refused to be divided along ethnic lines. Eventually, he managed to connect with Bono of the rock group U2. Bono, moved by what he heard, agreed to give voice to the people of Sarajevo by using a satellite link during European concerts to let residents of Sarajevo speak to U2’s fans about what was happening.
Carter is writing the script for the film.
Sakiya, who was headed to the West Side this past Friday to apply for a passport, has transferred from Cle Elum-Roslyn High to Ellensburg High because the Ellensburg school is on a semester basis and Cle Elum-Roslyn has a trimester schedule.
“It makes it possible for me to get the credits I need to graduate,” says Sakiya, a senior who is currently involved in a special program offered on the CWU campus.
She says her experience working as an intern and living in Bosnia will be the basis of her senior project, the culmination of what she views as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only will she learn about filmmaking, she says, but also about the history of a country and its civil war.
Her father has already made a donation to her fundraising effort. Now other supporters are preparing to help with two special fundraisers one on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg Senior Center and the second on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the same times.
Several local residents will offer health services or products and Sakiya will present information on her planned trip and activities.
