New Yorkers are clearly happy for any occasion to let loose these days. Thursday evening, a mix of fashion editors, designers and celebrities ignored cold, misty rain, and ascended to the New York Palace Hotel's rooftop to help Burberry celebrate its new Madison Avenue headquarters and the neon signage crowning it. Champagne flutes were handed out, smoked salmon canapés abounded, One Night Only gave a live performance and there was even a countdown leading up to a light show of said signage, complete with smoke and some enthusiastic cheers.
But as decreed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, it was actually Burberry Day. And so black-clothed men handed out checked umbrellas so guests like Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy, Lily Donaldson, Carla Gugino, Rose McGowan, Molly Sims and Emmanuelle Chirqui could frolic on the untented, white-carpeted roof and admire the New York skyline.
"I wanted it to feel a little bit glamorous," said Christopher Bailey of his rather brave decor choice.
while Orlando Bloom chatted with Dancy and Danes.
"Christopher called me and said 'Do you want to come help me light the light?' and I was on my way to L.A. so I thought 'Why not?'" explained the actor of his presence.

First to walk the carpet were Danes and her British beau, Hugh Dancy. Danes and Dancy may have been perfectly polite when they declined to stop for press (I was surprised Danes even acknowledged us erratically shouting her name), but we’re still mad at you, Claire. Same goes for Orlando Bloom, who stopped to talk to one news outlet before brushing past the rest of the line. But we do have to give props to Bloom for his impressive dodging skills — he avoided a reporter from Fox 5 with moves like a NFL running back.

Mr. Bloom, who stuck around late into the evening, smoking cigarettes, gave props to the company's creative director, Christopher Bailey: “Christopher called up and said, ‘Oh, we’re having a party, and lighting up the lights at the building across the street,’ and asked if I wanted to come along, and I was like, ‘Yeah, of course, man!’ I was on my way to L.A. He’s done a fantastic job. He’s an amazing artist.”

“Yes, Hugh and Claire are good friends,” confirmed Bailey. “And Orlando [Bloom] wears Burberry a lot.” On Bailey’s arm when he arrived was supermodel — and Burberry face — Lily Donaldson. “I love her personality,” he said. “I love being with her.” Once inside the party, Bailey formed an impenetrable clique with Bloom, Dancy, and Daines.
