Have to agree. I can't think of why anyone would think his career has been mis-managed. Things do happen in the course of making a movie which can turn a perfectly viable screenplay into a piece of crap.Adrian Paul of Highlander fame has told the story about the making of "Dead Men Can't Dance." If you ever come across this picture on TV, RU (although MR. HAPPY was a cute bit...wicked boy). Adrian will tell you he hates this movie. So why did he sign on? It was a good script, and he'd met with the director to discuss it before he put his "John Hancock" on the dotted line. Unfortunately, when he arrived for filming, there was a new director who took the story in a completely different tangent. He signed on to do "Susan's Plan" with John Landis and a pretty decent cast...what should have been a good movie turned out to be crap. Happens.

Do you think any of them thought that picture would turn out the way it did. O'Toole blamed it on the director. He wouldn't even watch it, except for one or two scenes.
Orlando then signed on to work with both Ridley Scott and Cameron Crowe...heavyweights in the world of directing and definitely not a stupid move. Unfortunately, "Elizabethtown" and "Kingdom of Heaven" were both ruined by the suits butting in where they didn't belong. For E-town, I think they were looking for another "Jerry MaGuire" which wasn't what Cameron had in mind. He wanted to do a movie on the relationship of a father and son. Suits didn't see much profit in that.

For KOH, Ridley has stated that they wanted an action-adventure flick and not what he was aiming for. Thus Ridley and his editor were forced cut the movie down to 20th Century Fox's satisfaction, so we got the "watered down" version. Again, look who signed on to KOH: Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, Edward Norton...excellent cast. Besides, it did do $200 million worldwide, so it wasn't like it was a bust at the box office. And the Director's Cut has gotten a lot of praise.

Anyhow, even though his management may get him the roles, he is the one who ultimately decides whether he's going to do the film or not. I seem to recall some interview Orlando once gave where he talked about how he was offered the part of Will Turner while filming "Ned Kelly." He said he'd considered turning it down, but Geoffrey Rush talked him into taking the part. I know now he says differently, that who wouldn't want to do a pirate movie, but I distinctly remember reading it. I'm going to have to hunt for it some time.
