Orlando Bloom, Vincent Cassel ("Eastern Promises") and Olga Kurylenko ("Quantum of Solace") will topline "The Cross," to be directed by Andrew Niccol ("Lord of War" ).
Niccol has initiated pre-production on the $24 million sci-fi escape story, which is scheduled to start principal photography in July in Australia. CAA packaged "Cross" and is selling North American distribution rights. Gregoire Melin's Kinology is handling international rights. Set in a border town, "Cross" returns Niccol -- Oscar-nommed for writing "The Truman Show" -- to his favorite domain: the near future. Bloom plays a man seeking to cross a mysterious border, something no one else has achieved; Cassel limns the guard who will go to any lengths to foil him. Kurylenko takes the femme lede. Structured as an Australia-France-Germany co-production, "Cross" is being produced by Bluewater Pics in Sydney, Paris' Spangherabero Films and Berlin's Opal Film Produktion. Wieland Schulz-Keil, Jonathan Shteinman, Jean-Vincent Puzos, Remi Burah and Niccol will produce; Alexander von Hohenthal is serving as German co-producer. "Cross" is a high-profile project on Kinology's Berlin slate, which also features gangster thriller "Vengeance" from Johnnie To. Film is written by Wai Ka-fai and features To stalwarts such as Anthony Wong, Lam Ka Tung, Lam Suet and Simon Yam. Gallic rocker Johnny Hallyday stars as a hitman-turned chef moved to action when his daughter (Sylvie Testud) and family are murdered. Currently in post and skedded for delivery in May, "Vengeance" is produced by Michele and Laurent Petin at Paris' ARP, To and Ka-fai. At Berlin, Kinology will also be showing footage from "My Own Love Song," now in post, from Olivier Dahan and toplining Renee Zellweger, Forest Whitaker and Nick Nolte. Kinology's slate is big on French helmers: Mathieu Kassovitz's "Rebellion"; Joann Sfar's "Gainsbourg," now shooting; Juan Solanas' "Upside Down"; and Antoine Charreyron's "The Prodigies."

Niccol wrote and directed Gattaca and wrote The Truman Show, so he has got good creds. Based on the description in Variety, The Cross sounds like it will be post-apocalyptic sci-fi set in the near future (so ummm, no laser swords, nmjade, sorry). I'm also impressed that film is not an adaptation of a book or play or graphic novel nor is it a remake. Even so, it got pulled together enough under the radar that Variety is still linking to the wrong movie and IMDb has nothing on The Cross, even in IMDbPro.
However, Niccol has an unproduced script called the "River Road" from 2000 (yes, I an a science fiction geek). There is a review on the script here, http://www.screenwritersutopia.com/modules.php?name=Content&;pa=sho wpage&pid=263. See, I'm thinking River Road is an early version of The Cross.
Some of the plot described from that October 2000 review:
In Andrew Niccols new script -- RIVER ROAD -- he introduces us to a prison-homeland. An unnamed country is bisected by a river. One side makes up 33rd District; the other 34th. On the 33rd District life is hard and despotic. You live meagerly, working the job youre assigned to, and if you even approach the gate blocking your way across the river...you are shot dead.
The one hope that keeps these people alive is to sneak across the river and into the utopia they can only dream waits on the side (since none have actually seen it).

Niccols three scripts have thus far been about a man getting somewhere hes not allowed. Ethan Hawke wanted to travel to space but wasnt genetically perfect in GATTACA. Jim Carrey wanted to leave his TV-show existence in THE TRUMAN SHOW. And now Milar (MY-lar) Kline is out to cross the small, gently-flowing river that might mean the difference between prison and freedom.
Niccol sets up a somewhat interesting villain -- the fastidious Gideon. Gideon might not be the greatest character ever written. But his torture for trying to escape is sure inventive. If you try to cross you must eat a bucket of 34th District dirt. Try again -- two buckets. And onwards.
Milar falls in love and eventually wins the heart of a local woman who runs a boarding house. The affair isnt quite logical because Niccol sets her up as a woman still getting over the death of her husband (who was trying to build a tunnel for them all to escape and got killed for it).
The script becomes a touch redundant as Milar tries to escape, gets caught, eats dirt, heals, goes back out, etc.
The escapes are always astute and intriguing. Theyre never boring. ....
I suppose its all made up for with the ingenious ending, which combines brains and spectacular, exhilarating action (hard to find these days).
Im assuming Niccol put this aside because he had his three million dollars and his funding, but he saw that the script was still flabby and needed to be shaped.
On the strength of his previous work, and all the greatness (as old hat as it might be) he hints at in this script, I have no doubts that RIVER ROAD will stand as another example of Niccols formidable, singular mind.

After a failed film (S1mOne) and a successful movie (Lord of War), Andrew Niccol returns to directing with The Cross, in which he has cast Orlando Bloom. Science fiction remains the most notable film genre exploited by Niccol (S1mOne, Lord of War) since he directed "Gattaca", a little masterpiece of the genre. Orlando bloom (Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, LOTR, POTC) has been hired to act as one of two brothers. Right now he is working under the direction of Mark Ruffalo in the comedy-drama "Sympathy for Delicious", alongside Laura Linney. He is also scheduled for Johnny To's action film "Le Cercle Rouge", in addition to Fools Rush In - Wings of Sarajevo, a movie about the dramatic events in the Balkans, which he is also producing. Andre Niccol is also developing a film about the artist Salvador Dali. |
