Sonia Copeland Bloom talks to Hilary Douglas about her movie star son抯 unusual but happy family background.

He plays the ancient swordsman who stole the most beautiful woman in history. Orlando Bloom抯 latest role as Paris will have him hailed as Hollywood抯 favourite swashbuckler as he snatches Helen of Troy, the princess whose face launched a thousand ships.

But, although Orlando has played alongside some of the most beautiful actresses of his generation, it抯 his mum who takes on the role of his true leading lady. Retired businesswoman Sonia Copeland Bloom organises her son抯 ever-growing fan club and will spend this weekend with her boy in Morocco, where he is filming the final scenes of Ridley Scott抯 new movie Kingdom of Heaven.

Indeed, those close to the 27-year-old actor say that it抯 his mum抯 down-to-earth approach to life that has made him one of the most likeable of today抯 young stars.

揑 helped set up Orlando抯 fan team, rather than a fan club,?she told me, 揳nd they help answer the mail, the 500 wonderful letters he gets every week.

揟he letters come from people of all ages, from eight to 60 or 70, but mainly from the nine to 25 range. Most are asking for a photograph, often to auction for charity, and Orlando thinks it抯 great to be able to help.

揝ometimes I drop off a sack of the mail to some of the ladies in Canterbury who have known him since he was a child, and they love to send out the replies.?br>
In 1988 Orlando shattered four vertebrae after falling from a friend抯 roof terrace. Remarkably, for such a spinal injury, he was well enough to walk out of hospital just 12 days later.

As a result, he receives many letters from people with back injuries, asking for advice or just seeking reassurance. In addition to the usual signed card, they receive special notes of encouragement added by his fan-team organisers.

揥e might put a little 慻ood luck?message or 慺ollow your dreams??added Sonia. 揑t抯 important ?it抯 a small team but they work very hard.?br>
It was his closeness to mum Sonia that helped Orlando and his sister Samantha cope with the news that Harry Bloom ?the renowned author and anti-apartheid campaigner ?was not their real father.

Their biological dad turned out to be family friend Colin Stone, who became Orlando抯 legal guardian after Harry抯 death, when Orlando was just four. The story, while unusual, is not quite what it seems. Harry Bloom, having had a stroke, was terminally ill for five years. During that time, he encouraged his wife to have a relationship with their mutual friend, Colin Stone. They had all worked together at a language school and, after Harry抯 death, Sonia and Colin decided not to tell the two children the truth until they were old enough to understand properly.

Sadly, the relationship between them did not work out, although Colin has gone on to marry happily and Orlando and Samantha see him regularly and remain close.

A family friend explained: 揝onia and Colin took advice from a child psychologist and after that decided not to tell Orlando and Samantha until they were 12 and 14 respectively. They took the news in their stride, I think, primarily, because they were very much loved and happy children who were surrounded by a very close family.

揟hey was no drama about the whole thing, it was just very much something that had happened and they understood why it had come about.

揥hen Orlando became famous, he decided it would be better to take about his real father before it came out in a nasty way. He spoke to  magazine and said it wasn抰 a big deal at all.

揚eople have said that, in some way, the family tried to make it a secret but that抯 very far from the truth.?br>
Mum Sonia stressed: 揙rlando has a very happy background. It is something he has grown up with. Orlando is not sad. It was marvellous when he learned that Colin was his father. He was brought up surrounded by a loving family.?br>
The Lord of the Rings star remains dismissive about the so-called family drama. 揑 was lucky,?he said. 揑 had two dads. I don抰 remember much about Harry but he was a prolific writer and my mother always speaks highly of him.

揌e has been a role model for me in my head. As long as I can remember, Colin has been a good friend but I always thought Harry was my real father.?br>
His parentage apart, Orlando enjoyed a carefree childhood, growing up in Canterbury, Kent, where he attended the ?,000-a-year St Edmunds public school.

A mild form of dyslexia proved only mildly troublesome but hard work and determination led him to three A-level passes ?two at grade A ?followed by a degree in drama.

揌e reads scripts all the time ?it hardly affects him now,?added Sonia. 揌e抯 a very bright boy, very artistic and very intelligent. It has made him very focused and I am sure that, because of all that hard work he had to put into overcoming dyslexia, he will always have his feet firmly on the ground and won抰 succumb to that starry thing.?br>
Although he was confirmed at Canterbury Cathedral as a youngster, we can reveal that Orlando has turned to Buddhism to help cope with the strains of Hollywood. He chants every day after having been introduced to the ancient Eastern faith while at the Guildhall School of Drama in London.

The peaceful nature of the religion, he believes, is perfect to help keep him centered and protected against the worst excesses of life in Tinseltown.

His show-stopping good looks, while attracting an army of adoring female fans, are a bit of an anathema to the Lord of the Rings actor. He describes himself as a chubby child who failed to excel on the school sports field.

It was perhaps as a direct result of his lack of sporting prowess that he blossomed when mum Sonia took him and sister Samantha to the theatre and to festivals where they took part in drama contests.

The pair excelled, and it was during this time that they both caught the acting bug. After late teens spent clubbing and partying, Orlando says he now prefers to stay at home and cook a nice meal for his girlfriend, up-and-coming Hollywood actress Kate Bosworth, as well as family and friends.

As he prepares for the first public showing of Troy amid the jet-set glamour of Cannes, Orlando is looking forward to getting back to London.

揑抎 rather just stay at home with my mates,?he confessed. 揑 like to cook, have a nice glass of wine, listen to some music with my friends. In terms of grounding it抯 good to have those people around you. That抯 why I bought a place in London. I need to have those people and family around just to keep my head straight.?/span>

I also feel really lucky. As a young actor there's a sort of rite of passage or something. You have to work  your way to position where you start to be able to have choices. And perhaps with Pitrates it will give me a position to have the choices.
