Orlando - Total Attraction
April 3, 2004
Paz Mata
Woman (Spain)
April 2004
Translated by Patricia
From Middle-earth he took us to the Caribbean and now Troy. With him, we go anywhere.
It's impossible not to fall in love with this guy with the caramel colored skin, eyes like hazelnuts, black, curly hair, athletic, seductive... A young man who never loses his smile and who is wise enough to realize how fleeting everything surrounding him is: "One day you're at the top and the next you're relegated to oblivion. What matters is doing your job well and enjoy doing it." Right now, Orlando is making the most of his run of good luck because aside from having a dreamy physique, he has shown that he's a versatile and chameleon-like actor, playing, while almost being unrecognizable, an Elf warrior, a soldier, a pirate, a boxer, a highway robber, a Trojan prince and very soon, a Crusader knight in Ridley's Scott's super production that was shot in Spain. Nine movies in seven years and Bloom has seen his childhood dream come true: give free rein to his imagination, make himself into a hero or an anti-hero and, in passing, make the girls fall in love with him.
What does it mean to you to be one of the most famous and sought after actors?
It means being lucky enough to work in great projects and with artists of high level. I've been very busy since I finished the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, I haven't had time to breathe, which can be good and bad at the same time. But I have to take advantage of this run of good luck which allows me to take part in things people want to see. Sometimes I get the impression that everything is a bit surreal, because when I'm on the set I live isolated from the world and when I'm out of the set it's time to promote a movie and dive into this media frenzy. As soon as the premiere is over, things go back to normal. I guess it's a matter of getting used to these sudden changes.
How do you feel when you're told that you're Hollywood's new hunk?
I don't know what they mean. I've never been one to look at myself in the mirror, I've always kept myself out of these things. I'm an actor, period. Johnny Depp, Daniel Day-Lewis or Paul Newman are also good looking, but their artistic talent is above their physical appeal, as they have demonstrated throughout their careers. I'm only starting and I have a long road ahead of me to become like one of them. But I suppose it's always flattering to be put on a list with men of this magnitude.
Do you enjoy knowing that you've beaten Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio as the actor with the most fans on the internet?
My audience is very grateful. Mi fans are lovely and they are always very nice to me. Unfortunately, I don't have time to read all the letters that I receive. I would like to answer them all. But all this has to do with the characters I've played. Legolas and Martin [?? Probably mean "Will"] are two good-hearted heroes. If I'd played serial killers, things would be very different.
You play Paris now, prince of Troy, who seduces and kidnaps Helen, the wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta, and thus a war is unleashed...
Yes, a very brave guy but with his actions he brought about his country's ruin. My luck will start changing, I can see it now.
What did you know about the Troy war before you started shooting?
The truth is... school was never my thing. I used to prefer sports, music and the girls. Afterwards, at drama school, I did a little Greek theater. Now that I'm an actor, I'm beginning to make up for it. It happened with "Lord of the Rings" and now with "Troy". I learn as I go along, while I prepare for my role. I read "The Illiad", or rather, I listened to it from an audio book and I admit it's a fascinating story once you catch the rhythm of its poetry.
Speaking of poetry, is it true that your mother introduced you to art and literature?
Yes, she signed up for a poetry contest in Canterbury, where I was born. It was the Kent Festival, a contest among schools, where the students read a poem, a passage from the Bible or the chapter from a novel in front of an audience and a jury. The winner would get a trophy or a diploma. I think that's when I started to enjoy acting. Mi sister Samantha was also an influence. She was part of a group of amateur actors and I never missed their performances. She invited me to join a school play and after that, I got a scholarship to study in London. But yes, it was my mother who, seeing the imagination I had, encouraged me to get out everything I had inside.
Have the things you learned at drama school been useful to you as a professional actor?
Very. It was a very gratifying and encouraging experience for me. It taught me to have integrity towards my work and my fellow actors. It gave me the tools I needed to start on my own journey as an actor. At the school I learned to work as part of a team.
What about the commercial side of your profession, appearing on magazine covers and being recognized on the street?
Well, they don't teach you that in school. Now that I'm in this business I start to understand something about this side of my profession, but I still don't know a lot. An actor tries to do his job as best as he can, there is no handbook that explains how to be successful in what you do.
You've worked with Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt. Did you learn something from them?
Yes, at least, I tried to take advantage of the opportunity of working with them and knowing how they have managed to arrive where they are. But everybody agrees that it's a strange business. There is no rhyme or reason in being suddenly successful doing anything in particular. You have to let yourself be guided by your instincts and your heart, even if it sounds clich閐.
Does your heart tell you to give it your all or to be more selective with your work?
When you are starting out, you have to give it your all, you have to pay your dues, even if your heart leans to certain things more than to others. Then you arrive at a place where you can allow yourself to look for things that interest you and with any luck, find somebody who is more interested still with whom to do it. What I know is that I'm not interested in being a movie star, I just want to be a good actor because this is what I like doing. I accept promoting a movie as part of my job because I know it helps that people go to see it, but I have to concentrate on the acting, that's what I do.
If you hadn't become an actor, what would you have liked to be?
I would have turned to sculpture or photography, another one of my passions. My mother keeps encouraging me not to abandon sculpture and deep down I think she would like to start a store with my pieces. Right now, all that is part of my hobbies together with sports like surfing, snowboarding and paragliding. I like being outdoors and feeling how the adrenaline flows through my veins.
Even though that attitude has brought you more than one setback?
Yeah, I've paid back in full.
The worst was falling from a third floor, an accident that almost left you paralyzed. Despite that experience, do you still feel attracted to risk?
Yes, I can't help it. Obviously, I'm more cautious now, I don't want to tempt fate, in case the next time I'm not so lucky. The worst accident, after which I was almost paralyzed, was good to help me get to know myself better. During that time I was at the hospital listening to the doctors say that I would probably never walk again, I refused to believe them, I knew that I would get better, but I admit I was depressed for a long time.
Apart from sculpture and sports, what do you do in your free time?
I use the time to furnish my house in London, which has stood empty for a long time. I like going to the flea markets, looking for original pieces. I haven't been home for the past four years, after New Zealand I was shooting in Morocco, in the Caribbean, Mexico, Malta and now, Spain. That's why it's rather strange to spend two straight months at home.
Do you have time for love?
There's always time for that, isn't there?
Do you consider yourself romantic?
No, not at all.
Are you a good boyfriend?
Yes, I think so. I'm very intense, I don't stop, I like to do a lot of things but I can also let myself go with the flow, not always being the boss. Well, it depends on the girl.
Tell us about your girlfriend, Kate Bosworth. What do you like about her?
I prefer not to talk about my private life, I don't confirm or say anything. At the moment we're dating and getting to know each other. She's a wonderful person and a very good actress. That's all I'll say.
(The green text is a bio, the usual).
