Astle's cryptics, which appear on Fridays in the Herald, are legendary for their difficulty. In terms of anagrams and arcana, they are Everest. Hence the hate mail – but he has fans too.

"I read a profile of Geoffrey Rush and he singled out my crosswords as being a bit of a hobby," Astle says. "Then I had the pleasure of interviewing him and he told me they had a puzzle-off happening on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp didn't know what the hell was going on but Orlando Bloom had his English upbringing so he was competitive. I love the image of these pirates on some atoll trying to get out an anagram."

一個叫Astle的秘語師(出字謎的人)，他說曾經出過一個縱橫填字表給海盜的演員玩。Geoffrey(演巴船長的演員)說他們劇組已經解了他的字謎。Johnny一點也搞不懂這個遊戲，然而奧蘭多因為自少在英國教教育下長大，所以對猜字謎很積極地玩。Astle說很喜歡想像一群海盜在珊瑚島玩字謎印象。

从不玩这种游戏，身边也没人玩。不过倒是常常看到电影里演玩这个。
我也喜欢想像开花和杰克船长凑在一起玩这个，开花很无语的对一直搞不清状况的杰克。
