Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean star Bloom, 32, is believed to own more than 40 valuable watches, but the stolen pieces are known to have been among his favourites and could have a combined value of more than £200,000.
Although some of the eight watches are more than 40 years old, they were all described as being in "superb" condition.
Vintage watch experts say it could be worth more than £120,000, while other stolen pieces include a £20,000 Rolex Submariner of the type worn by Sean Connery in the James Bond movie Goldfinger and a 1970s Explorer model known as a "Steve McQueen" because it was of a type favoured by the Great Escaspe actor.
Kent-born Bloom, who was in New York at the time of the raid on his LA home, recently sold several watches from his collection to raise funds for the U.N. children's charity Unicef of which he is an ambassador.
News of the theft has been circulated to collectors around the world
Burglars apparently knew what we didn't -- Orlando Bloom had hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry in his Hollywood Hills home -- notice the past tense, because we've learned burglars made off with the bling last night.
Law enforcement tells us the thieves entered Bloom's house though a window and made off with roughly $500,000 in jewelry -- including two very expensive watches.
Cops fingerprinted and photographed the scene. So far no suspects.
Bloom was in NYC at the time.
UPDATE: Law enforcement sources tell us it does not look like "a typical burglary." They will not say if it looks like an inside job.
The Los Angeles home of Orlando Bloom has been broken into, PEOPLE has learned.
Sources close to the Pirates of the Caribbean star confirm that police were called to the residence and burglars may have made off with personal effects of the actor, who also appeared in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Bloom, 32, was last spotted filming in New York City and was not at the scene of the crime.
A rep for the actor could not be reached for comment.

The English actor was not at his house at the time of the break-in and immediately headed home to make a list of what had been taken.
The Los Angeles police department were called to the property early this morning and have now made the place secure.
