Yeah, regular clothes are only worn by detectives, not regular police officers. Detectives are basically a different rank, and don't have a regular 'beat' that they patrol. If his character is going to law school, he has already graduated college, so I guess that it is a possibility that he took, and passed a detective's exam. Even smaller towns have detectives. Durham is not a big city, but it isn't Mayberry, either.
I do remember one article referring to Orlando as playing a "deputy". If that is the case, he would be part of the Sheriff’s office, and not the police force. They have different uniforms altogether. The County Deputies around here all wear khaki uniforms. Darker khaki pants, with a lighter khaki shirt. Oh, and cowboy hats. But no tellin' what they wear in NC.
But I guess that we will have to wait for the on-set pics to start rolling in before we know how he is dressing for the part.
