Jools becomes Marlowe patron
Jools Holland, the UK’s most popular pianist and bandleader, has agreed to become a patron of the New Marlowe Theatre Campaign.

Mr Holland said “For many years, the south east has needed a major venue which can attract world-class productions and performers – the New Marlowe Theatre will at last make this possible.

“I’m also thrilled that the new theatre will put so much emphasis on education and development.

“Young people need the flexible spaces that the New Marlowe Theatre will offer to develop new and exciting talent in the performing arts. I am looking forward to being part of this inspiring project.”

Holland joins 12 other influential Patrons – including Orlando Bloom and Joanna Lumley – who are backing the New Marlowe fundraising campaign which aims to raise £6m of private donations towards the overall costs of around £25.5m.

The New Marlowe Theatre will include a new three tier, 1200-seat main auditorium, a second performance space, and enhanced public areas including restaurants and bars, and a riverside walk and city-centre piazza creating new opportunities for outdoor performances.

The second space is intended for use by community groups, schools and universities, with the intention if nurturing young talent.

Press Release - Orlando Bloom backs the Marlowe
18 October 2007
Actor Orlando Bloom has been named as an honorary Patron of the New Marlowe Theatre campaign, a development project to build a new theatre and centre for the performing arts in the heart of historic Canterbury, a birthplace Bloom shares with dramatist Christopher Marlowe.

The Canterbury-born actor has joined nine other influential founding Patrons – including Joanna Lumley – who are backing the New Marlowe fundraising campaign, which aims to raise £6m of private donations towards the overall project cost of around £24m.

Other patrons are Allan Willett CMG (Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Kent), Professor Sir Robert Worcester (Chancellor, University of Kent), Lady Vallance, Robert (Bobby) Neame CBE DL, Edwin Boorman OBE DL, Dave Lee MBE, Lady Swire and Lady Northbourne.

Bloom has a strong affection for Canterbury. He was educated at the city’s St Edmund’s School and retains firm links with Canterbury through friends and family. The star of blockbuster trilogies ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ made his very first public appearance at the Marlowe Theatre when he was a child.

That early exposure to the stage, coupled with his love of drama classes at school, imbued the young actor with confidence and ambition. He has often spoken of his early experiences and the importance of giving young people an opportunity to get involved in theatre and acting. He also has a strong appreciation of the valuable community role played by the Marlowe Theatre.

Orlando Bloom said: "Canterbury and The Marlowe Theatre hold a special place in my heart and I’m delighted that I’ve been invited to be a Patron of The New Marlowe Theatre campaign. Regional theatres like the Marlowe are an integral part of the community, and they have a vital role to play in bringing people together from all backgrounds.

"I feel passionately about engaging young people in the performing arts, and I will do all that I can to encourage the region’s youngsters to be inspired by The New Marlowe Theatre.”

The Marlowe Theatre, although a highly successful and popular theatre, is much in need of updating and improvement. The ambitious plans for its redevelopment include a new three-tier 1200-seat main auditorium, a second ‘producing and performing’ space and enhanced public realm spaces including a riverside walk and city centre piazza, creating new opportunities for outdoor performances and exhibitions.

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the focus on the creation of new work in the ‘second space’, which will have a strong emphasis on developing and promoting young talent via its links with the local community, schools and the universities.

The Campaign Board, led by Chairman Sir Graeme Odgers DL, which will take responsibility for raising the £6 million of private donations, has also had great success in securing new Board members, including Sir Michael Bett CBE, James Bird DL, Andrew Clague, Clive Relf and HHJ Nigel Van Der Bijl.

Sir Graeme Odgers DL said: “The announcement of our Patrons and new Board members is an exciting milestone for the Marlowe Theatre campaign. When the new Marlowe emerges in 2010, it will be a vital, re-energised local theatre of national significance. We are delighted that so many important names have agreed to become champions of this transformational campaign.”
